The Vice President of Global Communications protects and advances the image and reputation of the company. The foundation of this position is executive presence, media savvy, team leadership, and a data-driven approach. Reporting to the SVP Marketing, this role is accountable for developing and executing our communications strategy including: PR and media relations, analyst relations, social media, executive communications, internal communications, community relations, and thought leadership.
It is important that the candidate is able to confidently communicate across all mediums and build relationships with staff at all levels—remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient, with a high level of professionalism. The ideal candidate deeply understands the levers available to drive market awareness and perception, excels in effectively communicating ideas and initiatives, and thrives in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented role.

What you will be doing:

  • Lead Instructure’s communications and thought leadership strategy across PR, AR, Internal Comms, Community Relations, and Social Media functions, and collaborate across the organization to bring that strategy to life.
  • Develop Instructure’s image and reputation narrative and messaging pillars, and activate throughout our communications programs.
  • Advance executive communications, including speaking engagements, media interviews, media preparation, and internal communications.
  • Cultivate excellent relationships with journalists and influencers.
  • Act as trusted advisor and enterprising problem solver to the executive team in all matters of communications.
  • Maintain policies and protocols for supporting the leadership team should proactive or reactive crisis management or issue response be required.
  • An empathetic and business-savvy leader with genuine enthusiasm for Education and EdTech.
  • Promote a high performance culture built on teamwork, trust, and a commitment to quality, continuous improvement, and learning.
  • Establish the cadences and guiding principles for how we talk to our employees and keep them informed through internal communications.
  • Bring a globally minded approach to communications to help grow our media relations function internationally and to support our growing base of regional employees to keep them connected with the rest of the company.
  • Coordinate effectively with external media relations resources helping with media placements in trade, business, and financial press; and collaborate with Instructure investor relations function in connection with quarterly earnings cycles.

Here is what you will need to know/have:

  • 15+ years of experience in Corporate Communications, Strategic Communications, Public Relations, or Analyst Relations leadership roles.
  • Communications leadership experience for a publicly traded company, working closely with the CEO.
  • In-house leadership experience in SaaS is required. Blend of agency and client-side experience desirable.
  • Experience building and managing high-performing teams.
  • Strong collaboration skills with ability to work across a highly matrixed organization to generate strong business outcomes.
  • Ability to help create and articulate an inspiring and clear vision for external communications.
  • Experience in the process of “influencing the influencers” to help drive category creation and lead the market in a new direction through strategy, thought leadership, and customer advocacy.
  • Experience in strategic and executive communications supporting senior leaders.
  • Experience creating a work environment that celebrates diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Highly strategic yet hands-on, able to balance long-term strategy with short-term results.
  • Track record of attracting and retaining top talent, motivating the team, delegating effectively as appropriate, and managing performance.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications and organizational skills with a high attention to detail.
